74 fans, 2 purses, 1 scarf, 1 book, 11 pins, 3 files of papers, stationery and cards. These fans and related materials were collected by Muriel Barnes Asmann (circa 1908-1965), Lake Forest College Class of 1931 alumna, and wife of Class of 1927 alumnus Edwin Neltnor Asmann (circa 1904-1991). Cultures of origin of the fans include Spanish, Belgian, French, English, American, Ute Indigenous people, Japanese, Chinese, Hong Kong; some are guesses rather than documented. The fans range in size from 2 to 18 inches in length.

This collection consists extensively of the written correspondence and personal papers of the three generations of the McClure-Stuart family. Namely, the letters convey the conversations between groups like parent to child, sibling to sibling, and friend to friend showing one family tree, as it covers a date range spanning as early as the 1790s and ending in the late 1960s.

It contains a variety of letter types including greeting/holiday cards, postcards, business cards (ex. Quaker Oats Co. letterhead), social call cards, telegrams, wedding invites, geographical maps, posts from the war front, US Diplomatic event cards, photographs, newspaper clippings, party lists and recipes, notes of sympathy, and special keepsakes such as drawings, a pressed flower, and even clothing swatches displaying the history of the well-respected Lake Forest McClure-Stuart family.

Overall, the 2,260~ letter collection is split into three parts: 1) Boxes #1-4 Letters of Nathan Fellows Dixon (I and II), Harriet Dixon, and James G.K. & Phebe Ann (Annie) McClure, 2) Boxes #5-9 Letters of the McClure Children, Stuart Grandchildren, and Items of McClure-Stuart Memorabilia, and 3) Boxes #10-13 Letters from Assorted Friends to the McClure-Stuart Family.

James R. Getz Papers

This collection contains the personal, but also official papers written by or connected with James R. Getz. It is a large collection that is split into three distinct series of 1) Personal and Early Life Writings of James R. Getz, 2) Documents involving the all Lake County Historical Society Work by Getz, and 3) Documents connected with the creation and Getz's role as founder of Mettawa, Illinois.

The papers consist of a variety of formats including correspondence, journals, interior design measurements and all kinds of handwritten notices, pamphlets, photographs, academic work, memorabilia, newspaper drafts, clippings, and published works, and a plethora of city planning documents showing the widespread process of establishing a town. Overall, the Getz collection equally shows the thoughts and ideas of a single family man and also a number of groups working to create a stronger community.

Chicago Athletic Association Collection

The Chicago Athletic Association Collection contains a number of governance records, including bound volumes of minutes from Board of Director meetings and annual reports dating back to 1890, committee meeting minutes, as well as bound ledgers with financial records.

Other financial and legal records include income statements, contracts, deeds of trust, safe deposit box records, and files regarding trademarks owned by the Association.

The collection also contains documents related to the Association’s acquisition and sale of art, largely oil paintings.

Additionally, the collection boasts a large number of membership materials. These include bound volumes of membership registers, as well as membership resignations and several binders addressing Association privileges and conduct.

The collection also contains typed correspondence, brochures and programs and historical information about the Association, as well as life membership records.

There is an extensive collection of member photographs dating back to the late 1890s.

Unique to the collection are materials related to Olympic athlete and Association member Joie Ray. These include a poster created in support of Ray, a scrapbook with newspaper clippings of his athletic achievements, photographs, race programs, his Association membership cards, a National Track and Field Hall of Fame certificate from 1976 and one of his race uniforms.

The collection consists of photographs, correspondence (both original and photocopied versions), newspaper clippings, autographs, extensive travel scrapbooks and diaries, and various documents of biographical memorabilia detailing the lives of the Neltnor-Anthony family and then the life of the collector and family descendant, Edwin Asmann. Overall, the collection is a diverse assemblage, spanning over 100+ years of time, of a well-known West Chicago and also Lake Forest family and its preserved keepsakes.

The collection is split into four distinct series-
Series 1) Photographs of the Neltnor-Anthony and Asmann Familes (Box 1)
Series 2) Neltnor Family Papers (Box 2 and 3)
Series 3) Papers and Scrapbooks of Edwin Asmann (Box 3 and 4)
Series 4) 1883-1892 Travel Diaries of Oliver H. Perkins (a relation of Asmann’s second wife). (Box 5)
